Albania’s 2013-2017 governmental programs focus on EU integration

TIRANA, Sept. 12  — Newly-appointed Prime Minister of Albania Edi Rama presented the governing program for the 2013-2017 term, featuring the EU integration agenda for the 2014-2020 period, at a plenary session on Wednesday.

Key pillars of the program are culture of compromise, guaranty of radical reforms and incentives for the promotion of professionalism.

According to the new program, Albanian foreign policy aims to correct the mistakes of the past — which have endangered Albania’s Euro-Atlantic future — accelerate pace of EU integration process and gain credibility in the region and in Euro-Atlantic structures.

“Our vision is concentrated on a strategic partnership with United States of America and European Union (EU), consolidation of relations with neighbor NATO and EU members, such as Italy, Greece and Turkey and countries in the Mediterranean and Balkan regions. We will deepen cooperation with Germany and Austria, encourage increase of bilateral exchanges with France, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Spain, as well as strengthen cooperation with other countries in the world,” stressed Rama.

In the new program, one of the national goals for Albania’s new government is to fulfill the obligations as a NATO member and push ahead with the EU integration process.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Albania, Ettore Sequi, also underlined the importance of political dialogue in Parliament.

“We know that the majority of Albanians want Albania’s integration into the EU, and this requires cooperation and dialogue,” Sequi told reporters after the plenary session on Wednesday.

“Europeanisation is a priority of the new government,” Sequi said, highlighting the role of parliament in the country’s EU integration.
